One more thing that I do, is to put a site-wide banner across the top of the old site warning of some downtime due to maintenance and that the site is moving.

The text always ends with something like \"...and when you no longer see this message, the move is complete.

That takes care of the fact that different people will first access the new location at different times.

If the old site has dynamic or user-generated content, that function is turned off on the old site immediately before backing up the whole site for the move to the new location.

In that case, the \"banner notice\" will also make mention that posting is disabled until the new site is available to you. After the move you will see those users accessing the new site in waves over the next few hours to days, and the number hitting the old site decline rapidly.

Thanks for the detailed info. I bookmarked it for later use. Just a quick check on your math, 24 hours = 86,400 seconds (60*60*24).
